The plant cARe app is an augmented reality application aimed at improving your relationship with your plants. It provides rich insights about the health of your plants by syncing to a bluetooth-enabled sensor embedded in the soil of your plants and a sister smartphone application. Once the sensors are embedded and the plant is registered with the plant cARe app, the user will be able to gather data about their plant.

 

PROJECT GOALS: Our goal was to create an application to help plant owners understand their plant’s needs on a platform that will initiate humans to feel more connected to their plants. 

WHY AR? Augmented reality allows you to connect and interact with your plant with data in real time to make informed decisions unrestricted by the edges of a screen.

SKETCHES

These are my sketches that were contributed to the overall design of the application. Much of the final design pulls from these original concepts that I envisioned. I wanted the app to at a high level to provide notifications and alerts on the general plant state. When focusing on a single plant, the owner will see what actions need to be taken and data visualizations of the health trends. 

 

WIREFRAMES

I based the wireframes off of a refined iteration of our sketches. We used the wireframes as an opportunity to explore the 3D space that AR provides.

DATA VISUALIZATIONS

I designed the data visualization charts, focusing on 3 pain points of plant care. 

DAILY SUNLIGHT EXPOSURE LINE GRAPH

  • Allows you to see how much sunlight your plant is exposed to throughout the day. Over or under exposure to light can be damaging to your plant and since we do not observe our plants throughout the day it is difficult to know how much light our plants are getting.

  • Line graphs are effective for showing many data points over time.

WATERING TRENDS BAR GRAPH

  • Allows you to see how your watering stacks up against what is best for your plant so you can make changes to how you water. From our research, a majority of people are not sure how much and how often to water their plants.

  • Bar graphs are effective for showing change over time and for comparing different water level quantities. Line graphs effective at showing the watering quantities that vary over time, which is often the case for watering plants.

SOIL pH SCATTERPLOT

  • Allows you to see how your soil pH is changing over time and what is best for your plant so you can make adjustments.

  • Scatterplots are effective for showing possible relationships between the different pH values.

 

ADD PLANT FLOW

The add plant flow makes it easy for users to quickly add a new plant by giving them the flexibility to choose between voice or photo recognition. In AR, these methods are preferred over text input due to lack of a physical keyboard and graphical-text capabilities.
